This is the beautiful comet Holmes next to α Persei (Mirphak).

Comet Holmes, discovered in 1892 by Edwin Holmes, is given the technical designation 17/P Holmes because it was the seventeenth periodic comet discovered. In late October, it suddenly brightened from 17th magnitude to magnitude 2.5 in several hours, due to the release of gas. It has been growing slowly bigger but dimmer since then.

This is one of my first astrophotos ever, so go easy on me for the poor technical quality.

At first I thought the blue smudge in the upper left was a nebula, but it is in a different place in each of the photos and was not on my star charts. It is most likely a reflection effect from the bright star Mirphak.

This image has a field of view of a little over a degree, and you can see that the coma of Holmes is about the size of a full moon.

I was hoping someone would upload pictures of Holmes! I'm surprise that even with magnification it still looks like a fuzz ball. But it does look a lot better than what one would view using binoculars - what I used.

Kinda funny, the appearance of this comet is what made me get into astro and build my first scope to view it! Come a long way since then lol. Still one of the best pics of it I've seen.

Cheers
