The Dumbell Nebula is a planetary nebula in Vulpecula. Planetary nebulae are clouds formed by main sequence stars which have reached the end of their fusion cycle and shed off their outer layers of gas. They have short lifespans, typically lasting about 50,000 years. This particular nebula is among the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, at around 1300 light years distance.
